Things To Try
  • Take turns banging on pots and pans
  • Put objects in plastic containers; shake them, open and close them, take things out and put things in; add words like "in", "out", "more" and "shake"
  • Fill up containers with water or sand; take turns dumping out, and talk about "pour out", "put in", "wet water", "dirty sand"
  • Take turns putting on each other's shoes, boots, and talk about "too big/too small", "My shoes", "Your boots"

Teachable Moments
  • Point to and name body parts when dressing and at bath time
  • During bath time, play with water toys, splash water
  • Go for a walk; point to and name objects that you see - rocks, birds, trees, cats, etc.
Understands
  • Can follow simple instructions ("Show me the... Give me the...")
  • Can point to 3 body parts when asked, "Show me your mouth"
  • Can understand more words than they can say
Expresses
  • Using at least 10 words or word attempts (mama or "ba" for "ball")
  • Can say "No!"
  • Can ask for what they want using sounds or words (Points to object and says "uhuh!" or "baba")
Play
  • Likes to play with toys that make sounds and do things (Jack-in-box)
  • Likes to move to music
Watch Out For
  • A child who is not trying to talk ( Contact the York Region Preschool Speech and Language Program at 1-888-703-KIDS)
  • A child who started to use words, but stopped
