Introduction
The program
has four broad aims:
- Education
- to provide teachers with information on language, social and literacy
development and on how best to promote these in the preschool / child
care environment.
- Application
- to provide teachers with opportunities to practise and apply newly-learned
strategies and approaches which promote children's language, social
and literacy development, with some feedback and guidance from Hanen
staff.
- Collaboration
- to work together as they plan and implement individual programs with
specific needs.
- Peer Support
- to give teachers the opportunity to share ideas, issues and concerns
with their colleagues.
Learner-centred
Approach to Teaching Adults
When teachers come to a Hanen Program, they are not coming to hear a series
of lectures. We make every effort to involve them in their own learning
through the use of:
- Small
group activities, discussions and brainstorming
- Interactive
presentations
- Self-
and peer-evaluations of teacher - child interactions on videotape
- A variety
of hands-on activities
Comprehensive
and User-friendly Resources
Guidebooks
and teaching DVDs, which assist both teachers and group leaders, are
designed to be both user-friendly and informative. The teaching DVDs
promote group problem-solving and discussion and the guidebook can be
used as a resource on an ongoing basis.

Group
and Individual Videotaping and Feedback Sessions
- Group
learning during evening sessions (total 15 hours)
- Individual
guidance in the centre (4 videotape sessions)
- Helps
teachers integrate concepts which they can apply to interactions with
children for years to come
Group
Sessions
- Allow
many teachers to receive information at one time
- Are usually
held in the evenings
- Provide
opportunities for teachers to share ideas and learn from one another.
Individual
On-Site Videotaping and Feedback Sessions
Interactions
between the teacher and a group of children are videotape during normal
daily activities and routines. At some point that day, teachers are
relieved of their duties by a staff member or supervisor so they can
view and discuss their videotape with a Hanen staff person.
