The York Region Preschool Speech and Language Program offers a range of intervention services. As a family centred program, we value parents' involvement in the treatment process.

To initiate this process, we will often recommend that a family attend a relevant parent education session.

Parent Education Sessions
Beginning to Communicate
This four session training program includes three sessions to help parents with children who have a developmental language age of under 9 months, to develop early communication skills. Topics presented include: attention skills, listening skills, turn taking skills, understanding and responding to early words, identifying early communication attempts. In addition, families participate in an individual videotaping session where they receive immediate feedback to help them incorporate the learned strategies.
Early Language Facilitation - This is a Hanen approved modified version of "It Takes Two to Talk®"
An intensive training program for families with children who are experiencing receptive and expressive language delays and who are saying few to no words. The focus of the program is to teach parents what to look for in their child's communication, and to provide parents with techniques that allow for the further development of language skills. Two individualized videotaping sessions provide parents with direct feedback as to their application of the learned techniques.
Connect the Words
This workshop will provide an overview of normal language development and the speech and language assessment process. Parents will gain understanding of the different interventions that may be recommended for their child. Parents will also be provided with techniques and suggestions to help stimulate further language development in their child.
Fluency
This four session training program provides parents with instruction in the identification of stuttering and its contributing factors. Parents will learn fluency facilitation strategies and have an opportunity to discuss and practice their application with other families. The course also includes two individualized videotaping sessions to provide families feedback with respect to their use of the learned techniques.
Let's Make Sounds
A workshop for caregivers of children who are experiencing difficulties making sounds. The workshop covers how sounds are made and how to work with children to enhance speech production. Parents will receive specific goals and game ideas for take home practice.
Picture Exchange Communication System
This workshop provides an overview and working knowledge of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Parents will leave the course with an understanding of PECS and how it can benefit their child. A vocabulary selection chart will be provided for parents to complete prior to introduction of phase 1 of PECS with their Speech Language Pathologist.
More Than Words - The Hanen Program®
An intensive 8 session training program for families of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or children with other social communication difficulties. This program is based on the Hanen philosophy and incorporates specific strategies to enhance the learning of children with ASD. Parents will learn how to help their children improve in each of the following skill areas: attention, imitation, comprehension, play, social interaction, creating predictability through routines. Four videofeedback sessions provide parents with the opportunity to review and receive feedback on their application of the material learned in class individually.
Target Word - The Hanen Program®
This 4 session training program is designed for parents of children who are late to talk, but have no other concerns. Parents, with the guidance of the Speech Language Pathologist, choose and target 10 words at a time that they wish their child would learn to say. These words are those that the child understands, and consists of sounds the child can produce. The sessions provide families with activities, experiences and modelling techniques to teach these words. The 2 accompanying videofeedback sessions provide families with the opportunity for individualized practice with the Speech Language Pathologist.

*All courses require payment of a materials fee.
