- Beginning
to Communicate
- Beginning to Communicate is a five-session parent program designed to provide parents with strategies they can use to help their child develop early communication skills. Parent sessions include the following topics: attention and listening, using gestures, imitation, turn taking, understanding and responding to early words, identifying early communication attempts. In addition to parent sessions, families participate in parent-child group sessions where they have the opportunity to practice strategies discussed in class and receive online feedback to help them incorporate the learned strategies.
Early Language Facilitation - This is a Hanen approved modified version of "It Takes Two to Talk®"
- An intensive
training program for families with children who are experiencing
receptive and expressive language delays and who are saying few to no
words. The focus of the program is to teach parents what to look for
in their child's communication, and to provide parents with techniques
that allow for the further development of language skills. Two individualized
videotaping sessions provide parents with direct feedback as to their
application of the learned techniques.
- Connect
the Words
- This one night workshop
provides an overview of expressive, receptive and early literacy development. Parents will gain understanding of
the different interventions that may be recommended for their child.
Parents will be provided with techniques, suggestions and take home packages to help
stimulate further language development in their child at home.
- Family Focused Stuttering Therapy
- This four
session training program provides parents with instruction in the identification
of stuttering and its contributing factors. Parents will learn fluency
facilitation strategies and have an opportunity to discuss and practice
their application with other families. The course also includes two individualized
videotaping sessions to provide families with feedback regarding their
use of the learned techniques.
- Let's
Make Sounds
- A one night workshop
for caregivers of children who are experiencing difficulties making
sounds. The workshop covers how sounds are made and how to work with
children to enhance speech production. Parents will receive specific
goals and game ideas for take home practice.

Picture
Exchange Communication System

This workshop
provides an overview and working knowledge of Picture Exchange Communication
System (PECS). Parents will leave the course with an understanding of
PECS and how it can benefit their child. The course also includes individual sessions with a Speech Language Pathologist or Communicative Disorders Assistant to get some hands on practice with the parent and child.

Than Words - The Hanen
Program®

An intensive
8 session training program for families of children diagnosed with Autism
Spectrum Disorder and/or children with other social communication difficulties.
This program is based on the Hanen philosophy and incorporates specific
strategies to enhance the learning of children with ASD. Parents will
learn how to help their children improve in each of the following skill
areas: attention, imitation, comprehension, play, social interaction,
creating predictability through routines. Four video feedback sessions
provide parents with the opportunity to review and receive feedback
on their application of the material learned in class individually.
Target
Word - The Hanen Program®

This 4
session training program is designed for parents of children who are
late to talk, but have no other concerns. Parents, with the guidance
of the Speech Language Pathologist, choose and target 10 words at a
time that they wish their child would learn to say. These words are
those that the child understands, and consists of sounds the child can
produce. The sessions provide families with activities, experiences
and modeling techniques to teach these words. The 2 accompanying video feedback
sessions provide families with the opportunity for individualized practice
with the Speech Language Pathologist.
Social Interaction Playgroup
This parent-child group is run jointly with Early Intervention Services and is for young children with social communication difficulties. The focus is on developing a functional communication system, social communication skills (e.g. joint attention, turn taking), and helping parents to further develop the communication strategies introduced in the “More Than Words” parent program (Hanen). This group consists of a combination of one evening session for parents as well as daytime group and individual sessions for parents with their children.
Social Skills Group
This group is for junior kindergarten children who are experiencing significant difficulties with social communication. The focus is on skills such as maintaining the topic of communication, interacting with peers, asking appropriate questions, perspective taking and identifying feelings. Parents are coached on helping their children in social situations.
