Information For MSH CDP Volunteers & Students

The Child Development Programs offer region wide Volunteer and Student opportunities.

Volunteers & students with children Co-ordinated through two York Region hospitals (Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket and Markham Stouffville Hospital in Markham), volunteers and students may register with the program to work both in the hospital environment and also in our community locations.

Volunteers/students have an opportunity to assist clinicians both in treatment and with administrative and clerical duties.

Volunteers
Volunteers are welcomed whether they can offer a couple of hours a month, to a regular weekly time commitment.

Volunteers can apply by completing an Application Form and faxing it to the Markham Stouffville Hospital's Community Resources Co-ordinator at 905-472-7552.

Student Placements
The York Region Preschool Speech and Language Program offers a wide variety of student placements. The program endeavours to provide a rich learning experience by providing exposure to every aspect of the speech and language pathology profession. Students are provided with optimal supervision, but also with the opportunity to demonstrate autonomy and initiative within this innovative Preschool Speech and Language Program.

High School Co-operative Placements
Students must contact their co-operative placement teacher at their high school to indicate their interest in a speech language pathology placement. The high school teacher will contact the local hospital to see if there are placements being offered in the settings near the student's school.
Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) Placements
Placements are facilitated by Georgian College and Durham College along with the CDA mentor of the York Region Preschool Speech and Language Program. Interagency agreements must be signed with the college and Markham Stouffville Hospital prior to the student practicum commencing.
Speech and Language Pathology Student Placements
Placements are facilitated by the Universities along with the Clinical Co-ordinator of the York Region Preschool Speech and Language Program. Interagency agreements must be signed with the University and Markham Stouffville Hospital prior to the student practicum commencing. First and second year student placements are offered.
University Students Who Want To Be SLPs or Audiologists
Placements are facilitated by the Volunteer Resources Department and the same steps are followed as listed under Volunteer Service Description.
